What is Pencils2MediaMoguls?
We’re asking people to use our site to buy pencils to send to the six media moguls who run the six corporate conglomerates.

Why pencils?
A lot of different fan sites were suggesting that people send pencils to networks and studios. United Hollywood and Strike Points met with some of the television showrunners, and together we decided to follow the fans’ lead.

Pencils have become the symbol of our cause: We are putting them down until we get a fair deal.

Symbolism, whatever. Let’s face it -- isn’t this kind of a waste of pencils?
We were worried about that too, so we found a vendor who makes environmentally sensitive product: California Republic Stationers. Their pencils are made from sustainably harvested wood, which means they don’t deforest.

We’ll also send the media moguls suggestions about where they can donate the pencils to non-profits that teach kids how to write. After all, the CEO’s aren’t writers. It’s not like they can use them.

What happens to the money from the pencils?
Anything we have left over from our costs will go into the Union Solidarity Fund, which was created to help non-WGA members affected by the strike.

So who are these “media moguls”?
They are the six men who run the multi-media conglomerates, the companies that control almost everything you see on tv or in the movies. These individual CEOs have the power and influence to make a fair deal and end the strike, if they choose.

Why can’t I just buy some pencils and mail them myself?
We’re taking a leaf from the Jericho campaign – where fans contracted with one vendor who could pool all their purchases together. That way, instead of individual bags of nuts, fans sent truckloads of nuts to CBS.

We’ve contracted with a single vendor to buy all the pencils for the same reason. We can deliver all of them in bulk, a truckload at a time, so the impact will be (we hope) greater.

You can mail pencils yourself if you want to, but joining together seems to have a better chance of getting noticed. It’s worked in the past.

But, um, if you do decide to mail pencils yourself, make sure they’re not sharpened. And please be polite. (We know how hard that is. Trust us.)

How come it’s a buck a box?
That price covers purchase and delivery of 12 pencils. (They’ll probably be packed by pallets instead of in individual boxes.)

And did we mention the “sustainably forested” thing?

All right, responsible pencils, I get it. But in the end, what are you trying to accomplish here?

We want the media moguls to start negotiating in good faith. We want the strike to end with a fair deal for both sides.

If we get a fair deal, it helps the actors, the directors, and the below-the-line crew members. Their deals are directly tied to ours.

Click to send a message to the moguls: It’s time to make a fair deal. We’re all on the same page.

WE'RE BACK!

Due to Technical problems the site was down over the holidays but we're back up now with a new total! Over the holiday we have been unable to obtain individual orders from Paypal's website. The problem is still ongoing and we are hoping they will correct it soon now that the New Year is here. In the meantime, we have manually counted the total pencils sold (no easy task) and you can find the total on the widget located at the top of the page.

We're sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. It has not been easy for us but we've been on the phone to Paypal everyday about this. In the meantime, the e-raffles are still on and winners will be selected by the end of the week.

This is your last chance to be entered into the e-raffles and receive a call, or a towel or even go to a hockey game, with your favorite star.

Good luck to everyone.

The race for most pencils sold draws close

As several challenges have been issued between fans and series we've have been asked to combine the total pencils sold on behalf of BattleStar Galactica. In the interest of being fair, since Criminal Minds and Lost have initially offered more than one prize from their total, we have decided to add all of the pencils sold on behalf of Battlestar into one grand total so that the fans can see where their show stands in comparison to the others. The same is true for Army Wives.

We will continue to track sales in the name of those celebrities who have offered to contribute to the campaign on behalf of their shows and winners will still be selected from those lists.

Stop the presses!

The first Pencils delivery has occurred.

Los Angeles – Television fans gave studio moguls from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) an unexpected early Christmas present: more than half a million pencils.  Over 200 fans and writers gathered in Johnny Carson Park in Burbank today to transform a 20-foot long, five-foot-high wall of boxed pencils into six giant delivery baskets full of pencils.

The pencils were delivered around Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley to NBC CEO Jeff Zucker; Robert Iger, CEO Walt Disney; and to Universal Studios for GE’s CEO Jeffrey Immelt, along with the message “Go Back to the Table”.  Talks between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the AMPTP broke down on Friday, December 7, when the AMPTP walked out of negotiations.

“Pencils 2 Media Moguls” was organized by UnitedHollywood.com, a website hosted by WGA supporters.  The website launched the pencil drive as a show of fan support for the WGA strike, now in its sixth week.  The site, www.pencils2mediamoguls.com is still up and still accepting donations for more pencils.

Peter Sears, a writer for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, demonstrated alongside the fans.  “These are the fans of the shows WGA members write and they’re saying they want the corporations to go back to the negotiating table.  They’re behind the writers and they want the companies to know it,” commented Sears.

At their first stop, Ronald D. Moore and Joss Whedon, creators and showrunners for Battlestar Galactica and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, along with a group of fans and writers, wheeled two baskets containing over 150,000 pencils to the front gate of NBC, to deliver them to Jeff Zucker. They were refused admittance by the guards at the gate.  (The refused pencils will be donated to non-profit children’s charities.)

Writers from a host of prominent network series made the pencil deliveries to the CEOs.  In addition to Moore and Whedon, they included Carol Barbee (Jericho) Alfred Gough (Smallville) and Miles Millar (Smallville).

Whedon fans looking to knock Smallville off their perch

(copied from Whedonesque fan site)

Smallville fans out-penciling Whedon fans, so far. In the Pencils2Moguls campaign, where fans are urged to buy boxes of pencils to be sent to the six studios making up the AMPTP as a symbolic display for the writers' strike, Smallville fans are edging out Whedon fans in boxes sold.

Obviously this can't be borne. We're also just ahead of "Lost," and way ahead of everyone else, but still. Remember, a random drawing of Whedon fans will get a call from Joss: "I'm warning you, I'm gonna call late, and probably drunk, and maybe cry. It's gonna be so cool." There are also incentives from "Eureka," "Jericho," "Battlestar Galactica," and more.

Lois Lane & Supergirl Support The Writers!

Have you sent in your pencils yet? Here's the latest correspondence from Smallville's creators, Alfred Gough & Miles Millar...

December 10, 2007

Miles and I are happy to report tonight that both Erica Durance (Lois Lane) and Laura Vandervoort (Kara Zor-el/Supergirl) have joined the Pencils2MediaMoguls cause! They will each call a fan who is picked at random in the e-raffle. Again, make sure that you mark SMALLVILLE Erica Durance or SMALLVILLE Laura Vandervoort as the show you are supporting. So far our fans have contributed a huge number of the pencils to the campaign, but those LOST fans are on our tail, and we need to show them that Superman can beat a bunch of castaways any day of the week!

Thanks for your continued support.

Happy Holidays,

Al & Miles

So what are you waiting for? Send some pencils, make sure they're labeled "Smallville Erica Durance or Smallville Laura Vandervoort," and Erica or Laura could be calling YOU!

EDWARD ALLEN BERNERO SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE FANS OF CRIMINAL MINDS

Criminal Minds: A message from Edward Allen Bernero, Executive Producer of Criminal Minds, to the fans of the show:

Have you guys seen the pencils to moguls thing at
United Hollywood? The WGA is going to swamp the
Moguls with pencils.

What we'd like to do is offer a raffle. We will draw a name from the names of the Criminal Minds fans who buy pencils and that fan will get a phone call from me, Ed, and as many members of our cast as we can get on the phone. I will be spending the day getting a list of the cast members who will be available, but I wanted to get the word out. Sign on to United Hollywood and start getting pencils out there and I'll be back soon to let you know who's going to be on the phone.

Let's show them how many pencils a truly driven fan base can get out there. Thanks, guys.

Ed Bernero

***UPDATE FROM ED: You can advertise a phone conversation with myself, Joe Mantegna and Thomas and say there are other calls in the works. There will be a total of three phone calls. One with Ed and two others with a star from the show. The call recipient will be chosen from the names of those supporters who buy pencils so make sure when CM Fanatics buy a pencil they register as a fan of CM. In addition, each fan that receives a phone call will also recieve an autographed script.

And, by the way, the LOST folks were crowing yesterday about how many pencils their fans bought. Let's beat them... AGAIN!

Jericho raises their flag for one fan

If you're "nuts" about Jericho here is your chance to own a canvas replica of the Cheyenne Flag (pictured here) which flew over Camp Liberty in the Season One Finale. One fan chosen at random in the Pencils2mediamoguls campaign will win the canvas replica flag which will also be signed by the entire writing staff from season 2. In addition, you will also receive a final production script of episode 22, Why We  Fight signed by Carol Barbee and Jon Steinberg who wrote the episode.  The  reader can see for themselves on the page the word that launched 20  tons of peanuts and saved a show, "Nuts!" Here's your chance to own a peice of the show by listing Jericho as the show you support when you buy your pencils.

All I want for Christmas is Lex Luthor

Order Some Pencils And Give The Gift Of Lex!
Smallville's creator Al Gough wants to show off the power of the show's fan base and he's offering up one of his lead actors to do it.

What is going on, do you ask? To support the ongoing Pencils2MediaMoguls pencil-sending campaign to support the WGA, Al offers you... Michael Rosenbaum.

Here is some correspondence from Al himself:

So, Miles and I were sitting around the other day (which is what writers do when they can't write and their picketing shift is over) wondering what we can do to kick this Pencils2Moguls campaign up a notch. Don't get me wrong, we are stoked by the response so far, but we felt there must be something we can do to really light a fire under it going into the holidays.

Then the answer hit us -- the greatest criminal mind of our time -- Lex Luthor.

We will give the gift of Lex.

Well, not really since he is, after all, a fictional character, but we do have Michael Rosenbaum, one of the best young actors of our time (in our humble opinion). We thought, why not offer a challenge to some of these other shows who have devoted fanbases (that's right Battlestar and Buffy I'm talking to you!) and see whose fans can really deliver the goods (in this case, pencils).

So here is the skinny:

For every box of environmentally friendly pencils you buy at Unitedhollywood.com, your name will be entered into an e-raffle. We will then pick a winner at random and they will receive at phone call from Michael Rosenbaum thanking them for their support of both the cause and the show.

That is right, Lex Luthor will call you directly! Make sure you list SMALLVILLE as the show you are supporting when you click on the icon.

So, Craig, please spread the word far and wide.....and thank you all for your continued support and good wishes. We are all in this together.

Best,

Al Gough

So what are you waiting for? Order some pencils and be sure they know you're writing in support of SMALLVILLE!

EUREKA accepts the challenge

Fellow Eurekans:

The Pencils2Moguls campaign has been up and running for a week now and so far the response has been unbelievable. Over 325,000 pencils sold in just over a week.

On Thursday, November 8th, the creators of Smallville offered a challenge to all of the other TV series who have devoted fanbases to see whose fans can really deliver the goods (in this case, pencils). "Don't get me wrong," Al Gough told his fans, "We are stoked by the response so far, but we felt there must be something we can do to really light a fire under it going into the holidays."

So Al and Miles decided to give the gift of Lex. For every box of environmentally friendly pencils Smallville fans buy at www.Pencils2MediaMoguls.com in the name of Smallville, their name would be entered into an e-raffle. A winner will be picked at random and they will receive at phone call from Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) thanking them for their support of both the cause and the show and an autographed photo.

Eureka has decided to accept Smallville's challenge. Like Deputy Jo Lupo, we may be small, but we're scrappy and we believe our fans are just as enthusiastic in their support of our show. For each box of pencils our fans buy in support of Eureka they will receive an entry into an e-raffle where one supportive fan will receive a phone call from Colin Ferguson (Sheriff Jack Carter) and co-creator Jaime Paglia, personally thanking them for their support. You heard right: Colin will call you directly! So let's show these guys that fans of our small town are big supporters, and make sure you list Eureka as the show you are supporting when you click on the icon.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA fires back at Smallville

Ron Moore

How would you like to go to a hockey game with the Chief?

That's right, our own Aaron Douglas will take one fan to a Canucks hockey game, along with another buddy of his up in Vancouver.  And how can you score this treat?  Simple.  By going to Pencils2MediaMoguls.com and buying as many boxes of pencils as you can.  On the first page (which is a subset of United Hollywood) you'll see a place to identify which show you're supporting.  Type in "BSG Aaron Douglas" and we'll enter your name into a raffle, with the lucky winner getting to attend the hockey game with Aaron.

In case you haven't heard, the Pencils Campaign is designed to send a huge amount of pencils to the major studios as a symbol of fan support for the strike.  More information can be found on their website.

Look for other offers from other members of the Galactica cast in the near future -- no idea what the offers will be or how many there may be.  I'll keep you informed.

ARMY WIVES support the WGA

The following was taken from Katherine Fugate's, the creator of Army Wives, home page.

28 November 2007

the Pencils2Moguls campaign has been up and running for a week now and so far the response has been unbelievable.  over 325,000 pencils sold in just over a week!

on Thursday, November 8th, the creators of Smallville offered a challenge to all of the other TV series who have devoted fan bases to see whose fans can really deliver the goods (in this case, pencils).

"Don't get me wrong," Al Gough told his fans, "We are stoked by the response so far, but we felt there must be something we can do to really light a fire under it going into the holidays."

so Al and Miles decided to give the gift of Lex.  Lex Luthor, that is.

for every box of environmentally friendly pencils Smallville fans buy at Pencils2MediaMoguls in the name of Smallville, their name will be entered into an e-raffle.  A winner will be picked at random and they will receive both a phone call from actor Michael Rosenbaum and an autographed photo thanking them for their support of the cause and the show.

well now.  that was a gauntlet thrown, wasn't it?

so indeed, the cast and creator of Army Wives have decided to accept Smallville's challenge!

for each box of pencils our fans buy in support of Army Wives they will receive an entry into an e-raffle where one supportive fan will receive a phone call and an autographed photo from Kim Delaney (Claudia Joy Holden) and series creator Katherine Fugate personally thanking them for their support of the cause and the show.

(if it ups the stakes any, we'll see if we can get one of those sexy lacy shots that Drew Fuller snatched and hid in his cave for winter.)

that is right, Kim will call you directly!   so make sure you list Army Wives as the show you are supporting.  remember, it's only a buck a box!

and as always, thank you all for your support.  we all feel it each and every day!

More cast members from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA make the Jump

The potential rewards for fans buying into the Pencils2MediaMoguls campaign just got bigger:

Ron Moore

Mary McDonnell, Tricia Helfer, Michael Hogan, Jamie Bamber, and Michael Trucco have all agreed to make a personal phone call to fans who win the raffles in their names.  The way this will work is simple:  when you go to the Pencils site, the first box you’ll see asks you the name of the show you wish to support.  Type in “Battlestar Galactica” and then the name of one of these actors, and your name will then be automatically entered into a raffle, with the winner in each category receiving a personal phone call from that actor.  You can certainly buy boxes of pencils for more than one actor, but each box can only be assigned one name.

Also, in the event that the winner of the Aaron Douglas raffle is not in Vancouver, or cannot travel there (on their own dime), Aaron has offered to make a personal phone call to that fan and send a piece of signed memorabilia.

This is a really great and generous offer from our cast members and it could be a once in a life-time chance to get to talk to them, so take advantage of the opportunity and help us drown the moguls in pencils!

Jamie Bamber from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA throws in the towel for Pencils2MediaMoguls

No, I haven’t turned this into a porn site.
Or at least, not yet.  I hear it’s quite lucrative.

Instead of a phone call, Jamie has offered to sign and donate three worn (as in actually worn, not threadbare) towels to the Pencils campaign.  The first two will go to the fans who buy the most pencils in Jamie’s name, while the third will be raffled off at random.  The towels will be yours to do with as you wish (insert your joke here) but any and all cloning will be subject to the appropriate international treaty restrictions.

Hey Charmed and Army Wives Fans!

Drew Fuller (Trevor LeBlanc) has joined the Pencils2Moguls campaign and will also give a lucky winner a personal phone call and an autographed photo.  So when you buy your pencils to support writers, be sure to indicate if it's Drew or Kim's challenge you're responding to!   Spread the word!
